Prefer the old format. Cannot find all articles. Feel it is limiting. Feel boxed in to a few feeds

Pay for a subscription? Great! You get the luxury of being inundated with ads. On any given screen of the app, up to 80% or the screen is covered in ads. A massive banner across the top: ad. Between every other story on the home page: ad. Every third paragraph in a story: ad. A mobile app has reduced screen space, but SCMP shamelessly saturates it with ads that make the app nearly unusable. All of those screenshots you see above are just renders, not what you’ll actually see. Why am I paying for this?

One criticism regarding the paid subscription: Subscribers should get exclusive content and newsletters. We also should not have to see ads! Also, the UI is terrible. Note to UX team - take a look at the format of the Wall Street Journal. Final criticism: Needs more in-depth and longer articles covering Chinese business, culture, and different regions of the country. Hong Kong is great, but now that it's a subscriber model, this paper should expand on their offerings. All in all, this paper gives a fair perspective on China. The US media trashes China, poisoning peoples opinion on a great country. They are not our enemy, and considering how messed up the US has become recently, we have no room to judge. Read this paper for an accurate perspective. I plan on being a subscriber for years to come.
  • After update, app is loaded with adds

After the most recent update was “forced” to all users, the app is now “saturated” with adds all over every news page. I have been using this app for a long time and the adds used to be reasonably placed on pages. Now, I’m considering completely deleting the app. I have to say to South China Morning Post: you made a terrible mistake to follow what US apps do. I’m done! Deleted the app. Good bye SCMP.
  • How Much??!

USD125 per year??! For the SCMP this is extremely high. It’s generally good reporting, but it is very regionally focused. The opinion pieces are mostly poorly written and pointless. If the price were 40% of this, it would be worth it. Otherwise, pay slightly more and get the Times of London, or the Wall Street Journal, or the New York Times which are all far superior to SCMP.
  • Terrible UX/UI

They tried to make it work nicely with gestures, however due to poor implantation, the swipes don’t actually do what you want them to do. Easier just to use the website

The news on scmp has deteriorated dramatically after the national security law has taken effect. Gone are the days of freedom of press.
  • Recent update a downgrade

I wish I had never been lured to update by the “performance optimisation” description. Now I get more mindless ads and am forced to accept cookies before reading anything. I refuse to use the app until these changes are fixed—remove the unnecessary ads and provide an option for people to refuse cookies if they don’t want them. I hope a better version comes out soon
